Definition

Degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis.

Causes

Deterioration of cartilage in the joint. This may be hereditary, due to excessive pressure on a joint over time, or simply caused by years of usage. Symptoms: Joint pain or loss of joint function.

Joint pain or loss of joint function.

Treatment

Exercise to promote joint mobility (Be sure to consult a medical doctor before beginning any exercise program). Ice and heat may promote circulation and provide temporary relief. (If any skin irritation or adverse reaction occurs due to icing, see your medical doctor). As with any orthopedic injury, a consultation with a sports medicine professional is recommended.
