Definition   Small to moderate tearing of the calf muscles (soleus and gastronemius).
Causes Sudden large force of pressure to the calf. Overuse injury common in running and jumping activities.
Symptoms Aching, stiffness, pain, swelling and limited range of motion in ankle.
Treatment R.I.C.E.- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Reduce activity to promote healing. Light ankle motion and exercises. Icing for 10-15 minutes after exercises, and seek advice on when to begin weighted exercises and stretching.
