Definition |
Small to moderate tearing of the calf muscles (soleus and gastronemius). |
Causes |
Sudden large force of pressure to the calf. Overuse injury common in running and jumping activities. |
Symptoms |
Aching, stiffness, pain, swelling and limited range of motion in ankle. |
Treatment |
R.I.C.E.- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Reduce activity to promote healing. Light ankle motion and exercises. Icing for 10-15 minutes after exercises, and seek advice on when to begin weighted exercises and stretching. |
